Beneath the Surface
Every place carries layers of meaning.
On the surface we see landscapes, architecture, and movement. Beneath that surface lie histories, rhythms of daily life, and the subtle human moments that define a society. Photography has a unique ability to reveal these layers,to pause time long enough for us to look more closely.
Beneath the Surface brings together a collection of photographic works that explore Zambia through the eyes of its own photographers. Rather than presenting a single narrative, the exhibition invites multiple perspectives: scenes of everyday life, landscapes shaped by time and work, and portraits that capture the dignity, individuality, and presence of the people who inhabit these spaces.
The images presented here do not attempt to define Zambia. Instead, they offer fragments — moments of observation that together form a broader portrait of a country and its people. Some photographs focus on stillness and atmosphere, others on motion and activity. Each contributes a distinct way of seeing.
The title of the exhibition reflects an idea central to SAVVY. In the world of gemstones, beauty is not created at the surface. It begins deep within the earth, shaped slowly by natural forces before eventually emerging into view. In a similar way, cultural identity and lived experience develop beneath the visible layer of a place.
Photography allows us to encounter those deeper dimensions.
Presented in Shanghai, Beneath the Surface connects Zambian visual storytelling with international audiences, creating a space for reflection, curiosity, and dialogue. The exhibition highlights the role of artists and photographers as observers of their environment , individuals who translate everyday experience into images that travel beyond geographic boundaries.
In bringing these works together, the exhibition seeks not only to showcase photography, but to create a conversation about our home, perspectives, and identity.
Each photograph in this collection offers a glimpse into Zambia as seen by those who know it most closely.
Together, they invite us to look again — and to look deeper.
